The Definitive List of Additions, Re-additions, Removals, and Changes Made to the 1,001 Movies List By the 2013 Edition, Plus Where You Can Find Them

This would have been up hours ago, but I’ve been besieged by powerful thunderstorms all day.  Now and then my UPS/Surge Protector takes a hit and shuts things down to protect my computer.  After the third or fourth time it gets really annoying.  I’ve basically been typing between the lightning strikes.

Anyway.

I have now gone through the entire 2012 and 2013 Editions side by side and put together the list of all changes the latest edition made to the 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list.  I will list those below, along with where you can see them, as well as some thoughts and analysis on what got added and removed.  Overall, 47 films got added, 3 got re-added, 50 got removed, and one entry got changed.  The latter resulted in two more films being added, but without adding extra entries.  I will explain below.  The total list now contains 1,152 entries.

General Book Changes:

They are using a new, smaller font for the title of the films.  It looks better and it takes up less space.  They have also added the director’s name to the title line.  They also corrected the foreign language film titles to be lowercase after the first word.  Most of the page entries have been changed in one way or another.  Any that are a full page or two pages now include additional facts and quotes in the formerly unused space in the column beside the text.  They also have the original movie posters included.  They have fixed some typos, bad grammar, and incorrect years given for some of the films.  I noticed some errors still carried over to this edition, though.  Overall, you could tell they tried to clean up some of the mistakes, which is a good thing.  The section where the cast, crew, and awards are listed is now smaller and therefore harder to read – the only negative thing I have to say with all the changes.  They did a good job with the new page presentations.

Films That Were Added:

Note: The numbering system for the new list is yet to be determined, since almost the entire list will need to undergo numbering changes.  For now I have simply labeled the new films “2013.01, 2013.02, etc.”

That’s it?  They gutted the 2000s in the earlier editions of the books because they didn’t want to have to change too many pages, so I was hoping they would return some of the ones unjustly removed.  I think most people would agree Boogie Nights deserves to come back, but the other two?  And where are any or all of Amelie, Hero, Adaptation, The Barbarian Invasions, Children of Men, Volver, and The Wrestler?

Entries That Were Changed:

893. Toy Story has been changed to the Toy Story Trilogy.  This is similar to when the three Lord of the Rings movies were combined into a single entry in 2008 except that Toy Story 2 and 3 have never been on the list.  This results in two more movies being added, but no net entry changes for them.

September 13, 2013 Edit: It's been pointed out to me by Peter Stanley, who maintains the 1,001 Movies list on Letterboxd (you can see it here), that there is a better connection between Local Hero and Housekeeping.  Both were directed by Bill Forsyth.  It turns out these two films are another of the director swaps that were done.

Most Represented Directors Net Changes:

In my post where I speculated on what the 2013 edition might change (you can read it here) I pointed out that a relatively few directors represented a disproportionate number of the entries in the book.  I suggested that dropping them down to more reasonable levels like all the other directors would open up all kinds of possibilities for other films to make it onto the list.  Let’s see what happened to them:

Alfred Hitchcock (18): 3 removed, 1 added, net loss of two films
Howard Hawks (11): 1 removed, 0 added, net loss of one film
Ingmar Bergman (10): 1 removed, 1 added, no net loss
Stanley Kubrick (10): 0 removed, 0 added, no net loss
Luis Bunuel (9): 1 removed, 1 added, no net loss
John Ford (9): 0 removed, 0 added, no net loss
John Huston (9): 1 removed, 0 added, net loss of one film
Martin Scorcese (9): 2 removed, 1 added, net loss of one film
Steven Spielberg (9): 1 removed, 1 added, no net loss
Jean-Luc Godard (8): 0 removed, 0 added, no net loss

These ten directors represented over 100 films in the list (102 to be exact).  After the latest edition with the changes up and down the entire list they now represent 97 films in the list – a whopping reduction of five whole movies.  I hope the editors didn’t pull something from such a strenuous restructuring.

That’s all for now.  I’m sure as I continue to sift through the changes I’ll notice other things of interest, but I’m all done tonight.

  1. You are awesome; I've spent most of the day looking for The Great White Silence, and you somehow have a link to it. I'm sure some of these will be on the Compendium soon enough, once we figure out how we're going to number everything, but having them already is nice to know. Uber thanks.

    1. You're welcome.

Thank you very much for the kind words. It has been a lot of work.

I just did the Compendium, using the temporary designations I have here. Once the numbering is figured out, they can be changed along with all the other entries that will also need to be changed. In the meantime, people going there will be able to get the links now. I'm in the process of updating the Books pages at the wiki now.

  2. I honestly don't get what they're thinking sometimes. We've had two Aileen Wuornos documentaries, but never Monster.

There are some bad pulls from the older stuff, too. I'm disappointed to see Angel Face and I Walked with a Zombie yanked out. If they needed a Val Lewton film out, I'd have knocked out The Seventh Victim. Five Deadly Venoms is a bad removal--the list is already short on kung fu action. And everyone in the world should bask in the awesomeness that is Marion Cottilard in La Vie en Rose.

I have to say it--I'm a little disheartened.

    1. Very good point about Monster. I hadn't picked up on that.

I agree with you on the choice of Val Lewton films.

I thought Cottilard did a fantastic job in that film; it was the film itself that let me down some. It was so relentlessly focused on the bad stuff. The term "warts and all" is sometimes used to describe bios that don't hold back the bad stuff. Well, I felt this one was just "warts".

I'm sort of used to them pulling good movies, so that didn't affect me much. I'm more disheartened by the ones they added, and especially by the ones they re-added.

    2. Agreed. My first re-add would be Amelie, followed by The Big Lebowski.

I have a feeling that this year, my "what they should add" post in December is going to be epic.

    3. Leaving aside the most recent year, most of which I was expecting, the only ones of the 49 added that I felt really happy to see were Field of Dreams and the Toy Story sequels. Although why they included Field of Dreams appears to be strange. The review of it by the female European critic is laughable. She completely didn't get the movie. Apparently she feels its popularity stemmed from a desire to deal with the fallout from the Reagan administration. If I could have come up with 100 reasons people like this movie that still wouldn't have been one of the things I would have listed.

There are some "fun" choices - Local Hero, Mary Poppins.

There were some others that fall into the "I'm not surprised" category - The Adventures of Prince Achmed, The Exterminating Angel, F for Fake, Oklahoma!, and Mrs. Miniver.

There are some "huh?" choices - The Towering Inferno, Wall Street, and RoboCop (although that's probably from Europeans' love of Verhoeven).

Of the rest, I'd never even heard of The Consequences of Love, The Devils, Diva, The Draughtsman's Contract, The Eagle, The Exiles, The Goddess, The Great White Silence, The Hired Hand, Limite, Peter Ibbetson, Sleeping Dogs, Some Came Running, Summer with Monika, A Throw of Dice, and Wake in Fright. That's 16 of the 49 - one third of them.

I've seen 21 of the 49 that were added, leaving 28 to once again complete the list.

  3. Chip, thank you so much for (a) getting this info out and (b) your thoughtful analysis of the various changes to the List. It's much appreciated!

On the one hand, it's good to know that the list creator(s?) is willing to not just add a dozen movies from the past year and drop a dozen movies scattered across the previous century, but to do a full fifty-movie revision with a lot more older additions. But on the other hand, I'm kinda crushed because this is going to stomp my completion percentage on the all-time all-inclusive 1,152 film list, much more than just adding 10 or 11 movies would have. Of the 49 new movies I have seen Mary Poppins, RoboCop, the Toy Story sequels, and F&$% YEAH CABIN IN THE WOODS WHOOOO. But that leaves me with some serious catching up to do. Ah well, I have until I die, right?

As for the ones cut from the official list, Say Anything is a sentimental favorite of mine (one of a handful of movies I owned on VHS in high school) but I think Pi and True Grit are both legitimately worthy - maybe they'll be re-included someday.

    1. You're welcome. I appreciate the compliments.

I liked all three of those removed movies you mentioned. In fact, I liked a lot of the 50 they took away. It's just that I didn't consider many of them to be "must see"s or even ones that had something unique or special about them. That's what I meant by not being bothered by most of them being removed. I'm sort of used to them taking away movies I liked.

"this is going to stomp my completion percentage on the all-time all-inclusive 1,152 film list"

Well, I've seen 21 of the 49, so my completion percentage went from 100% to 97.57%. For me, the hit is more psychological than anything else. I watch all the Oscar nominated movies each year, so that always cuts down on the impact when the new additions are announced. As it turns out, I had already seen all eight of the 2012 films they added.

I don't know what kinds of movies you like, but among the ones I've seen that you haven't, I would recommend: Amour, Argo, Bowling for Columbine, Dead Ringers, Django Unchained, Field of Dreams, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Local Hero, Mrs. Miniver, Oklahoma!, Skyfall, and Wall Street.

My Top recommendations would be, in order: Field of Dreams (5 stars), Django Unchained (4.5 stars), and Argo/Life of Pi (4 stars).

    2. I totally take your point about the difference between "it's good and I'm sorry to see it go" and "it genuinely is MUST-SEE". Fair enough.

Thanks for the recommendations! Django and Argo were both already close to the top of my Netflix queue before I read your post today. Life of Pi, I read the book and really liked it, so the movie seemed kind of ... superfluous? ... especially now that I can't see it on a big screen in 3-D.

Field of Dreams I'm frankly embarrassed to have never seen. I thought about putting it on my queue this spring (baseball season and all) and was surprised that it wasn't on the 1001 List, which caused me to hold off on it. No excuses now though!

    3. I've seen a much smaller percentage of the new additions, but I have seen a few you haven't. Here's my take on them:

Argo--I don't know if it's the best picture of 2012, but I think Ben Affleck was robbed by not getting a director nod.
The Cabin in the Woods--A fantastic example of a genre re-write. It's the film I'm happiest to see make it.
      Dead Ringers--Damn creepy!
The Devils--The best word to describe this is blasphemous. It's unforgettable and might be genuinely great.
      The Eagle--Low-grade Robin Hood.
Field of Dreams--Another film I'm so pleased to see make it.
RoboCop--I'm surprised, but I like it, so I don't mind rewatching it.
The Towering Inferno--It's going up on my site tonight. It's big and dumb, but it's a hell of a spectacle.
Toy Story 2 and 3--I'm surprised they took this long to make it.
Wall Street--I'm not surprised. It's the perfect Reagan-era film.
