(But I’m guessing you already figured that out for yourself.)
I spent a week in Acadia National Park . The weather was great the first couple of days, but was only so-so after that. I didn’t get as much hiking in as I had been hoping to do. It was good to get out of the usual routine, though, and it’s still a beautiful place to be.
One of the bad weather days I did go see The Avengers again – the first time since 1994 I’ve gone to a movie twice. It was a theater that specialized in serving you pizza during the film, so that was an interesting twist.
I’ve actually been back for a few days. Rather than jump right into writing recommendations again, I decided to get serious about tracking down my unseen movies from the 1,001 Movies list that are not available via Netflix. There are a total of 128 films. Over the last three days I’ve managed to track down 125 of them. Alas, three managed to defeat my google-fu. Those movies are 1969’s Lucia, 1981’s Too Early, Too Late (aka Trop tot, trop tard aka Zu fruh, zu spat), and 1995’s Deseret . Oh, I found links for them, but they were all invalid. I did find possible working links for the latter two, but they required a premium Filepost account to get to them.
If anyone can point me to working copies of any of these three movies, I would be most appreciative. (No torrents, please). I’m not morally opposed to torrents, but I am opposed to opening up my computer’s security in order to use them. In return, if you are having trouble finding a 1,001 Movies film other than these three, it might be one of the 125 I just tracked down for myself. I could point you in the right direction.
I mentioned when I went away that I had not liked Dark Shadows enough to recommend to others, so I had not written a review post, but had put some comments in my main 2012 Big Summer Movies post. I had figured I would return with a review of Battleship and/or Men in Black 3, but having seen both, I cannot recommend them either. Like Dark Shadows, they are not horrible movies, but they are also not that great.
Perhaps I am in a more critical mood this spring compared to last year, or perhaps this year’s movies have not been quite as good. Maybe they are all just suffering in comparison to The Avengers. I was on the fence with Men in Black 3 for a bit. I was considering whether a nice reveal at the end could redeem the rest of the movie. If you are curious about my thoughts on either film, you can read them here.
I’m not sure if I will be able to make my way through the backlog of posts I missed at all of your sites while I was away, but I will try.
Your Google-fu is stronger than mine, and that's saying something. I'll be sending you a list.
ReplyDeleteOh, and welcome back.
Welcome back Chip, I don't think you are being overly critical, MIB3 and Dark Shadows were both terrible. Although for some reason I have seen some people praising MIB3.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back! pizza during the film...whatever next...I'm still waiting for a movie theatre where we can use our noses/sense of smell...Men in Black 3 looked promising, I'm hearing it's better than MIB2, but not as fresh as the 1997 original. Will be interesting to see Josh Brolin's performance, is it just an extended cameo?
ReplyDelete@SJHoneywell - Thanks.
ReplyDelete@3guys1movie - I think the MIB praise is for Brolin's take on Jones and for something that happens at the end that is the last impression people get of the movie.
@Chris - Didn't they try "Smellovision" back in the 1950s when they were also trying 3D and wiring the seats for shocks, or is that just something that was made up? As for MIB3, Brolin is actually the co-star of the film. Jones is the one who has nothing more than an extended cameo.

ReplyDeleteThanks! I'll save it off and see if I can find a subtitle file I can match to it. If I do, I'll let you know. I didn't have much luck with Mother and Son or Rocco and His Brothers, which I both found on Youtube, so I just sought out movie files for them, too.
DeleteI posted this over on Steve's blog, but I figured I'd post this here as well seeing as you're the one who seemed to want this most of all; here's the link to my multi-part archive of Deseret: http://www.mediafire.com/?0b18e11nues4o2l,14orjumdf7q6jqi,pqlqmjnukybr5gg,syafmc7i6a00fb7,25pxx0ihzoimpa8
ReplyDeleteIf there's any problems, just let me know; this is my first multi-part archive I've uploaded, so I have no idea if it'll be problem free or not.
That worked perfectly. HJSplit put it to one file then Winrar opened the folder with the movie. Big thanks! Are there any movies from the 1,001 list you are still searching for? I posted a bunch of links on Steve's blog, but I had some others I needed to track down for myself that he didn't need.
DeleteI started a wiki for us to pool our information as to where to find some of the harder to find films, as well as to add info on the films themselves, if you want some extra work. :)
ReplyDeletehttp://1001films.wikia.com
Spread the word.
Oh; you and everyone else is more than welcome to add to the wiki; that's why I picked a wiki.
DeleteHmmm. This is an unintended case of "turnabout is fair play". You had to figure out how to get the movie staged so that Steve and I could get it - something you had never done before. Now I've got to figure out how to work with a wiki - something I've never done before. Sure, I've read entries at Wikipedia, but I've never edited or added entries. This should be interesting. Thanks for initiating this.
DeleteBy the way, I've got my 1,001 Movies tracking sheet about three quarters updated for what movies are and are not available via Netflix for the half I have seen. I have discovered a few that I've seen that will require alternate sources for those people who have not. I haven't sought any of those out yet. I want to finish updating the list first. When I do I will update the downloadable tracking sheet I have at Lists from Chip. For future reference - http://listsfromchip.blogspot.com/2012/05/1001-movies-you-must-see-before-you-die.html
