The large majority of the time that I notice more than a shot or two in a film is when the film itself is not holding my attention whether because the story is uninteresting, the acting isn't compelling, or the pace is too slow. It's not that great cinematography takes me out of a film and therefore lessens it; it's that I only really notice the cinematography when the movie is less than impressive.

There are always exceptions, of course, and Lawrence of Arabia is probably the finest example one can make for this, for me at least.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-82599775294101437202015-01-13T16:34:34.978-05:002015-01-13T16:34:34.978-05:00Can't say I disagree with the major points you...Can't say I disagree with the major points you've presented; this is pretty much what I expected your review of this to be. Neither can I disagree with your assessment that a good half hour (or maybe more) could've been excised from the film without losing very much.

There was a class in the film school I went to where one day we were supposed to bring in a clip or sequence from a film that best exemplified what it was about cinema that we loved so much. I brought in the train robbery scene from this film; it is unquestionably the single most breathtaking sequence in the entire film, and one of the best-looking scenes in all of cinema, in my opinion.

I've made mention numerous times on my blog how I can get by the shortcomings of a film if it is unbelievably nice to look at (well, most of the time), The point you made in reply to my comment on your other post about how a really strong film shouldn't need the cinematography to be so good that it takes you out of the film is a valid one as well. This film is probably one of the really good examples of just such a film, and why a film like this manages to work for me where it otherwise shouldn't.Adolytsihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12266038228108057617noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-13122317720755010532015-01-12T14:58:04.387-05:002015-01-12T14:58:04.387-05:00Yeah, after seeing Gone Baby Gone I expected the y...Yeah, after seeing Gone Baby Gone I expected the younger Affleck's career to take off, and had I seen this movie back then I would have expected it even more. It was another three years before he made another movie, though, and it was with this same director.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-5233761387386063802015-01-12T14:08:28.443-05:002015-01-12T14:08:28.443-05:00This is one of those films that serves as proof th...This is one of those films that serves as proof that someone really has the goods. Casey Affleck has skills in front of the camera, and this film is the proof of it.

I agree that it's too slow and it's a bit too meandering. It could lose that 30 minutes without losing much. Still, it's an awfully pretty film even when not much is happening. There are some interesting choices here, and while I don't agree with all of them, I agree with many of them.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.com
