Nothing here that really shakes my world. It does feel like a boring update of the list.
TSorensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12208153011927807857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-72195478571083507262015-09-27T18:08:27.305-04:002015-09-27T18:08:27.305-04:00Nightcrawler was a great movie that was overlooked...Nightcrawler was a great movie that was overlooked both by critics and the editors of this book.

You are in agreement with most of us that they have cut the 2000s too thin. The reason is one of practicality, though. The earlier they go back in the book and remove something then the more page layouts they have to redo for the next book. Removing films only going back a few years means MUCH less work for them. When they redid the list from the beginning there was hope that they would restore ones from the 2000s, but other than a couple of entries that didn't happen. And they even ended up with a net gain in the 70s, which is by far the decade most in need of cleaning out.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-59510682557615168682015-09-27T18:03:46.255-04:002015-09-27T18:03:46.255-04:00The one thing we can count on every year are the d...The one thing we can count on every year are the discussions of what should have been added and removed. They've even had errors in the images of the book's table of contents in years past. I'll live ...Thank you as always for the update! I'll live vicariously through you and just copy the list additions and not get yet another copy of "the book" for my overcrowded bookshelf. I saw the blurb on Amazon and I thought Interstellar was mentioned as an entry this time? I guess not. Anyway, it's easy to nitpick the list. I would have had Wild Tales instead of Grand Budapest Hotel or maybe Ida, though I did like that film. Leviathan is a good add, though probably not one you would want to see multiple times.1001: A Film Odyssey is produced, directed and written by Chris, a librarian.https://www.blogger.com/profile/04803620768028761898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-37798156213871613222015-09-26T23:46:21.275-04:002015-09-26T23:46:21.275-04:00The first several segments of Boyhood were not ver...The first several segments of Boyhood were not very long, but neither of the kids were old enough to really act. I noticed a change around the fourth or fifth year where both were noticeably better. I mention this only in case it was the kids that were the negative that made you stop watching.

I haven't seen Frances Ha. The editors don't like big, CGI movies typically, so Snowpiercer would have a knock against it there. Even though they did add Guardians of the Galaxy this year the text describes it as being far from the "normal" comic book movie and still laments that it resorted to a large CGI battle at the end.

And we've talked many times about their aversion to animated films with WALL-E being the only new animated film to ever be added in the entire time they've been doing it. (This doesn't count the 10th edition which added The Adventures of Prince Achmed, while removing Animal Farm, leaving no net difference; and the sort-of addition of the Toy Story sequels by changing the Toy Story entry to one for the Toy Story trilogy. And WALL-E was removed the very next year after it was added.

Other than that, the closest they've come to adding a new animated film is Avatar, which is 60% animated.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-36950457439191626722015-09-26T22:27:47.138-04:002015-09-26T22:27:47.138-04:00Also, now that I'm looking at it, I'm a li...Also, now that I'm looking at it, I'm a little surprised that Frances Ha and Snowpiercer, both critical darlings, were not added. Thanks for the ...Have you also reviewed those six?

Thanks for the info on HBO.

I was a little surprised myself at The Tree of Life being removed. It was added during the initial critical euphoria over it, but once the dust settled there was a whole lot of re-appraising going on that seemed to be building to a consensus of "lots of pretty pictures; not much substance." Maybe that's why they pulled it.

I gave The White Ribbon three stars (recommended), but it's not my favorite Haneke film. Gomorrah was 2.5 stars (just okay) for me. Several others being removed were 2.5 or 3 stars for me. The only one I really hates was The Kid with a Bike, so yes, I'm glad it was pulled, too.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-8652103134954776362015-09-26T21:26:27.489-04:002015-09-26T21:26:27.489-04:00If you do pick up the book just be aware that most...If you do pick up the book just be aware that most of the entries have spoilers for the movies they are talking about. I'm surprised at The Tree of Life. I think both Gomorrah and The White Ribbon are better than you do (especially Gomorrah, which I think is essential viewing).
