Is everyone batshit crazy? I love your summation of the film: "a pseudo-Hitchcockian political thriller about the people in England who wanted to appease Hitler rather than go to war with him."

Because it is not a true story, I think it would have been a better film without the book-ending of present day scenes. That slowed down the pacing.

I wrote a short post on Glorious 39 called "The Policy of Appeasement." It was very Hitchcockian to me.

In regards to your questions, not all families are close and loyal to each other; some families are the kind where you have to keep one eye on the others at all times. Anne, being adopted, was sometimes treated by some in the fammily as if she was not "really" part of the family.

There's a very practical cause behind the animals, but explaining it here would be a spoiler for those who have not seen the film. Sorry.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-65791352459671681402013-08-09T14:38:16.950-04:002013-08-09T14:38:16.950-04:00I was losing patience with the movie about an hour...I was losing patience with the movie about an hour and a half into it...I saw the paranoia, the policy toward Hitler, the film noir-type movements in hallways and serrupticious shadows, but everything was so muddled for me by the close of the story that I had way too many questions for it to have been enjoyable for me. Are they family, after all or not? I don't understand all the dead animals. Just more palpable allusion to impending war and disaster? Gosh, I got on the net the minute it was over hoping to find out what I'm missing and/or what the story is really all about. I love a good thriller, but this one seemed wholly overdone if that's all there was to it.
