As others have said, the acting by the two leads really made it work. And I think it was a good portrayal of autism for its time. If it were made now, the portrayal of an autistic man would seem cliched, but I think it was outstanding for 1988. :-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-88835416813966575712012-09-21T17:14:01.841-04:002012-09-21T17:14:01.841-04:00No, you're right. In the 80s he was "that guy from Top Gun" so people didn't take him seriously until he did films like this one and Born on the Fourth of July (still his best performance). He did finally get some Oscar noms in the 90s, but his public antics in the 00s made people focus more on his off-camera actions, rather than his work onscreen.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-9937662394193431372012-09-21T04:40:45.944-04:002012-09-21T04:40:45.944-04:00I remember seeing this movie when I was much young...I remember seeing this movie when I was much younger, so I don't recall everything about it. I need to see it again soon!<br />For me Dustin Hoffman is one of the best actors alive and I am glad he won the Oscar. I do also agree that Tom Cruise is often overlooked, but I think it's partially because of his personality and choice of other roles- he is not usually taken serious, but I might be wrong. Even Hoffman and Cruise wondered if the movie would work while they were filming it.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-5007681927808578312012-09-17T12:37:50.225-04:002012-09-17T12:37:50.225-04:00Good review Chip. A bit too over-sentimental and predictable by the end, but still packs an emotional punch that works mainly because of the performances given by Hoffman and Cruise. Anything else worth mentioning? Not really, other than the fact that they are both great.Dan O.http://www.dtmmr.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-41660721843140779572012-09-16T22:41:22.547-04:002012-09-16T22:41:22.547-04:00It's funny. It has been some time since I last saw it, though.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-83966692554874757002012-09-16T22:37:26.756-04:002012-09-16T22:37:26.756-04:00I sometimes avoid films if the promos turn me off,...I sometimes avoid films if the promos turn me off, too. And, you're right, Cruise was very good in this and was overlooked at the time.Kimberly J.M. Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09078951928157843937noreply@blogger.com
