Especially HAL the computer, and the limits of space travel.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-41323503721153795642013-10-27T22:40:20.321-04:002013-10-27T22:40:20.321-04:00There have been many concepts in science fiction s...There have been many concepts in science fiction stories and novels that were eventually made real by advancing technology. The most famous example is Arthur C. Clarke writing about communications satellites back in the 1940s. Rocket ships were once written about as science fiction. Author Robert Heinlein described two everyday devices in his stories that inspired people to actually create them - the waterbed (Stranger in a Strange Land) and the waldo (Waldo). Heinlein actually proposed the term "speculative fiction" to describe what we call science fiction because he felt that too many people would be expecting aliens and space ships when they heard the common term and the genre encompasses far more than that.Chip Laryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-72539656199493688462013-10-27T12:51:06.572-04:002013-10-27T12:51:06.572-04:00You're a fast reader, even though I enjoyed it...You're a fast reader, even though I enjoyed it, took me several weeks to finish :)

Does seem to be a book that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. There are things that would be lost on children, but I think the characters would appeal to them, especially boys I could imagine rooting for Ender.
I think Tim Berners-Lee from UK officially invented the internet(or so I heard during the London Olympics opening), but it is interesting how Orson Scott Card foreshadows today's technology.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09395044055566348346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-71136730084178577922011-08-17T22:45:58.716-04:002011-08-17T22:45:58.716-04:00After you do read it, please let me know what you ...After you do read it, please let me know what you thought of it.

As to your other post where you said you had been told it was a young adult novel - other than the protagonists being children, I can't see why someone would have told you that. The concepts in the book, such as group dynamics and dominance, war tactics and strategy, and global politics, would probably all be lost on someone too young to grasp them.Chipnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-11946024906709800722011-08-17T22:10:41.336-04:002011-08-17T22:10:41.336-04:00ok i think you've persuaded me. next time it c...ok i think you've persuaded me. next time it comes in to the shop i'll buy it for myself.blahblahblah Tobyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13370451386116555733noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4564277570960354470.post-62706999325644516522011-02-13T00:54:01.675-05:002011-02-13T00:54:01.675-05:00Fabulous book.
